Donald L. Hercules – Coach (1947-1982)

Don Hercules held many roles during his time at Cedarburg High School including teacher, athletic director, golf coach, baseball coach and assistant football coach.

He is best known for his tenure as the head varsity basketball coach, which lasted for 15 seasons starting with the 1948-49 season.  He produced five title-winning teams while posting a 185-129 overall record.  Under his leadership, the Bulldogs won three 4-C Conference championships in 1949-1950, 1951-1952, 1952-1953 and shared two Braveland Conference titles in the 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 seasons.

The basketball style of Coach Hercules consisted of set plays with an emphasis on defense and fast breaks.  He was known as an excellent mentor who maintained a positive tone for his players, and had the uncanny ability to bring calmness to his team during the stress of competition.  Coach Hercules’ strength is manifested in the wisdom he passed on to his players.

In 1988 the All-Ozaukee basketball teams, players and coach of the 1950’s were selected.  The individual accolades went to Coach Hercules as he was selected as the “Coach of the Decade” and the 1952-1953 Cedarburg basketball squad as the best team of the decade.
