J. Wallace “Porky” Hoffmann - Athlete (Class of 1932)

John Wallace “Porky” Hoffmann earned twelve varsity letters while competing in football, basketball, track, and baseball under the direction of Coach Claire Fellows who led all of the squads.  He played right halfback in football, guard in basketball, and catcher in baseball, in addition to running the sprints and long jumping in track.  During his senior year, “Porky” was the captain and leading scorer of the basketball team, as well as captain of the football team.

“Porky” is best known for his accomplishments in the sport of track and field in an era where all races were held on a cinder track.  As a junior, he qualified for the state meet in the 440 yard dash and finished in fourth place.  In his senior year, he qualified for the Class “B” State Finals in Madison and won the state championship in the 100 yard dash.  This was a unique accomplishment, as he became the first Cedarburg High School athlete to become a state champion in any sport.  His record time of 10 seconds flat in the 100 yard dash set in 1932 was never broken and has been only tied twice.
