Tyler Hawley was a leader on the soccer field at a time when Cedarburg High School rose to prominence as a state soccer power under the guidance of Hayden Knight.
The CHS boys’ soccer program won a North Shore Conference, WIAA Regional, and WIAA Sectional championship each of Hawley’s three years on the varsity team (1994, 1995, and 1996). The Bulldogs finished as the WIAA Division 1 state runner-up in 1994 and 1995, and won the WIAA Division 1 state championship in 1996, a year in which Hawley was voted to the All-State and All-Midwest Regional Soccer teams. His five goals in the 1996 WIAA state tournament are a record that stood for fourteen years.
After graduating from CHS, Hawley received a scholarship to play soccer at Indiana University. During his four years at IU, he was a starter at forward, midfield, and back on teams that won three Big Ten championships, advanced to four NCAA Final Fours, and won the NCAA Division 1 National Championship in 1998 and 1999.
Hawley is the only CHS athlete to win a state high school championship and a NCAA national championship. His extraordinary success at both levels was a product of his determination and exceptional athleticism.
